When travelling as a tourist in any country you are often shielded from the true culture of that place. Uganda provides opportunities to get out of the vehicle and encounter its varied cultural history from the forest Batwa pygmy people in the south west to the nomadic warrior Karamojong in the north with many other traditions of music, dance, language, food and art.
One thing we recommend is to slow down a little while on your safari, and enjoy an activity such as a community walking tour run by and directly benefiting local people. This can give you a better feel for the everyday lives of Ugandans. Meet the locals and see how they live, work and relax, try the local banana wine, see how they collect and use natural herbs for medicine, join a family for some local food and maybe try and join in with a traditional dance.
